Anna Lo is an Alliance member of the Northern Ireland Assembly. She was born in Hong Kong in 1950 and has lived and worked in Northern Ireland for nearly forty years. A former social worker, she was the first ethnic-minority politician elected at a national level in Northern Ireland, and became the first politician born in South-East Asia to be elected to any legislative body in Europe.

We meet in her office at Parliament Buildings in Stormont.

Anna Lo:

I would rather use the term ‘Northern Ireland’ than ‘Ulster’. ‘Ulster’ always seems to me to be a more Protestant term. I try not to use it. I would rather use a more neutral term – ‘Northern Ireland’ – and I try not to say ‘the North’ or ‘the South’ as well.
